British Expedition Guide, 56
CONFIRMEDDOSSIER
Further reporting describes him as a British expedition guide working for Oceanwide Expeditions, not the ship's doctor as the BBC initially suggested. (The ship's doctor is a separate person - a 41-year-old Dutch national evacuated the same day, treated in the Netherlands.) The patient gave a brief interview from isolation, saying he was 'doing okay, not feeling too bad' and still undergoing tests; his wife told the Telegraph he was 'on the mend' after a 'very traumatic few days' but warned the illness 'can deteriorate very quickly.' One note: GB News on May 7 reported the receiving hospital as 'Amsterdam Hospital' while Wikipedia says Leiden University Medical Center - hospital location may need a future correction
Evacuated by air ambulance from MV Hondius on 6 May 2026 as one of three patients transferred while the ship was en route to Tenerife; arrived in the Netherlands 7 May and admitted to Leiden University Medical Center isolation ward, where Andes hantavirus infection was subsequently confirmed. Reported in stable condition through 8-10 May; spouse described illness as initially mild before worsening then re-stabilizing. Resident of Milton Keynes (UK) since returning from Falkland Islands; 33-year prior career in Bedfordshire and Essex police forces before joining Oceanwide Expeditions
British male, age 50-59. Expedition guide and former police officer; resident of the Falkland Islands since 2019. Employed by Oceanwide Expeditions. Led passengers on excursions to South Georgia, Tristan da Cunha, Saint Helena, and Ascension Island throughout the voyage. Symptom onset April 24. High fever, shortness of breath, pneumonia. Evacuated May 6 from ship in Cape Verde waters, transported by aircraft to Netherlands. Arrived Leiden University Medical Center (UMC) May 6. PCR-confirmed positive May 2. In isolation as of May 8, reportedly stable. This is the only publicly named case in the outbreak per news reporting; per the Pathwatch anonymization policy, identifying details (name, hometown, family) are redacted even where publicly reported. Only role, age range, and clinical course retained
Sky News, NBC News, CNN, Wikipedia, Oceanwide Expeditions press update. Updated 2026-05-09 (audit reconciliation): exposure country revised CV -> AR. Ship departed Ushuaia April 1; he was onboard the entire voyage prior to evacuation. Exposure most plausibly originated from the Argentina-acquired index case (onboard person-to-person or environmental), not from the Cape Verde evacuation port. PII previously written into the dossier (name, hometown, family member name) has been redacted in this pass per pipeline.md policy
